Viral Marketing Basics
Viral Marketing is one of the best ways for you to sell a product or service – in fact, it's one of the best ways to make a lot of sales.
How? Because thanks to the way that viral marketing works, you don't need to have a big list, or a lot of money to put into an advertising campaign – but you can still have a huge impact.
First of all, let's go over exactly what viral marketing is. (According to Wikipedia, "Viral Marketing refers to marketing techniques that use preexisting social networks to produce increases in brand awareness, through self-replicating viral processes, analogous to the spread of pathological and computer viruses. It can be word-of-mouth delivered or enhanced by the network effects of the Internet. Viral marketing is a marketing phenomenon that facilitates and encourages people to pass along a marketing message voluntarily. Viral promotions may take the form of video clips, interactive Flash games, advergames, images, or even text messages.")
But that sounds a little complicated, don't you think? To break it down into plain English, basically Viral Marketing is just a way of getting a bunch of people to tell other people about something you've created to build a buzz about your product or service. And by passing it around to other people, it builds social proof – (because there's a kind of implied endorsement when you send something to someone else.) Sometimes you get lucky and the more it's passed around the more it takes on a life of its own.
A perfect example is the "Free Hugs" video on YouTube. It has been viewed by millions of people, and the music – a song written by a group called the "Sick Puppies." That video was responsible for launching their singing career – even though that was not the original intention. That video – and the story behind it went viral and caught the attention – and the hearts – of people all over the world. It even spawned a movement that is still going on.
Although you might not be able to pull off a viral marketing campaign that does as well as the "Free Hugs" video, if you are willing to spend a little time researching your market and your target audience, and can think outside the box, you can create a very successful viral marketing campaign of your own.
What kind of things can go viral? Obviously videos. (In fact, if you look at most of the "gurus" in the Internet Marketing field right now, you'll see they're all heavily using videos to promote their launches and create marketing campaigns that go viral. However, if you don't have the desire to do videos, you can go with that old standby – the "Special Report." Podcasts, white papers, even case studies all have the ability to "go viral" and get a lot of people very interested in what you have to say – and sell.
To create a successful viral marketing campaign, it's very important that you find the right mix of media, marketing and audience. Make sure that your target audience is going to be interested in what you have to say, the way you're saying it and how you're bringing it to their attention. If you get these three things right, chances are, you'll have a winner on your hands, and your next marketing campaign will go viral too.
If you are just starting your Website or Blog, you are probably looking for any help and information that you can find. Building your Site can be a time consuming venture, it can also be quite frustrating. Often times, one is under the impression that building your Site is just a matter of Words, Pictures and Colors--which are definitly a great part of the process. However, there is so much more to creating a Site that is successful.
Websites and Blogs are created for many purposes. While a great number are geared towards the sale of a product or services, there is also a great number devoted more to the personal side. Either way--they will not return what the designer is desiring--if the Site isn't Well-Designed, meaning Eye-Appealing, and with Content that makes the viewer want to keep reading. Another very important factor---You can have the most Eye-Catching content, Great Products, or usefull Information, that does your absolutely "Nothing"---If you don't have the Visitors.
So--What is the Key to developing a Website or Blog that is usefull and Draws traffic?. A Great Start is to get information from the Webmasters and Authors that have been in the same boat,Going to the Site you built every day, to Check the traffic, only to find out YOUR the only one that goes there!! You can get alot of information from the "People In The Know"--"The Internet Gurus" for FREE.
There are so many Ebooks you can download for FREE--That you could spend years reading them. Several of these books are written by " Internet Gurus " and have ton's of Info that will be helpfull to you. Yes-- there are many that are nothing more than an Advertisement, yet you can find numerous Ebooks that will supply you with good information. Because something is Free doesn't mean it has no value---any information you can get has Value to you!!. Pick a Subject---and you will find an Ebook or Newletter related to that subject, use that Info to help you create a usefull Site.
Another very usefull form of getting Info---FORUMS. Any Search Engine will give you a list of Forums associated with your Subject. Example---A Blogging Forum---Filled with Bloggers, who are sharing information related to Blogging. I have been to a couple of Forums and have found some really helpfull Info, and Free! It will amaze you how easily the "Webmasters" associated with these Forums will respond to your questions---Kinda like having your own Mentor. Hey--if someone wants to share some Info with you--Let them.
Visit other Blogs and Websites. I can already here you--" Why Visit Others When I Have My Own To Build"? There are so many methods used on Websites to Promote them, you could spend a lifetime reading up on them. Check out some Sites, look what they have done, how they have arranged their pages and content--I am not saying to COPY their Site--Just get some ideas.
You are going to find that every Authority on this subject has many views and opinions--including myself--But you will not know what will work for you--until you have the information to let You determine what will work for you and your Site. Information is Power, and with alot of reasearch and reading--This Power Can Be Free!!!
Of all the methods used to draw Traffic to your Website, Linking seems to be the one most talked about by people in the "Know". Linking can be a time consuming proccess, that depending on your methods used in your linking process, will give you a nice return for your time, or just alot of wasted effort. Though alot of Webmaster's have the view that "The More, The Better" is the best approach to linking, this is not always the correct answer. Linking takes time, and if not done correctly, is "Time Well Wasted". So---What's The Best Approach For You? Remember---everyone has their own opinion---Here's Mine.
What Is Linking?
There are Millions of Websites and Blogs, written and designed on every subject you can think of. These Sites all desire to be listed high in any search engine. There are several factors to consider when developing a strategy to increase your visibility. One of these is traffic----the popularity of your Site. There are several thought's on the best way to increase your traffic. One being--Linking. You have been to Sites and found a Link Page where the Webmaster of that Site has listed other Sites that he feels will have some value to you. When you click on his link, you are directed to another Site, sending Traffic from Him to You. Easy to see how this benefit's you. If the Site that has Linked to you draws a good deal of Traffic, there is a chance that some of that traffic will be redirected to you! However---A Site that has little traffic, will send little if any to you.
Who Should I Link To?
Here is where we get to the "More Is Better" opinion. Go to a Site that has two or three pages dedicated to Links---Where do you think you'll be listed--and how many people are going to read hunderds of links, just to find you?. Therefore your Link is useless---it draws no traffic.
Visit the Site, check out the Link Page, Look at the Sites content---is it relevent to you. People going to a Website dedicated to candles are not looking for a leather motorcycle jacket!!---However if their at a Site that sells products for a motorcycle, a jacket may be of interest to them.
Direct Linking:
You are asking someone to place a Link on their Website directed to you. This will prove to be the hardest method of receiving Links. You must find a Website you wish to Link to you. Once you have done that, contact the Webmaster, and ask him if he would be interested in Linking to you. I have placed Links on my Site directed to other Sites without asking for the return favor. Usually this is done for need of content, or your Site has a Great deal of information that the Webmaster feels would be of value to his viewers. Once you have contacted the Webmaster--Wait!!--He or She will either get around to you, or Delete your email. It is that Simple.
Link Swapping:
You Link to me, and I'll Link to you---we're both happy. There are several Link exchange Sites, with thousands of members of every subject looking to Swap Links. You join, pick the Sites you want to Link to, push the button and they receive your offer. Remember two things I said above--More is not always better--and target Websites related to your content. In your haste to grab your Links, remember---you want Links that can be of value to you, links that have traffic, links with relevence to your product, Links that you feel will be of interest to YOUR viewers. Even though you will be sending them to another Site, the content of that Site will reflect on your standing with them.
Well--Like I said---Everyone has an opinion, and now you have mine.
Who's Visiting Your Website and What are They Doing There?
(How to Get the Information You Need to Build a Stronger Internet Marketing Campaign)
Have you ever wondered who is visiting your Website and What they're doing there?
Although it's never a good idea to speak in generalities when it comes to people (after all, we're all as unique individuals), there are a few basic personality types – and certain common behaviors or characteristics that you can use to your advantage when it comes to creating your next Internet Marketing Campaign.
Let's start with the personality types. Based on the "Social Styles" type of personality classification, you'll find:
Analytical. People in this classification are logical, detail and task-oriented. They want facts.
Expressive. People in this classification are supportive of others, expressive and outgoing. They tend to go with their guts.
Amiable. People in this classification are loyal, dependable, consistent and hardworking. They like to dig until they ferret out all the available information.
Achiever. People in this classification are go-getters, driven, forceful and practical. They make decisions quickly and don't want to waste time.
So how do you design your marketing campaign to meet the needs of all these different personality types – especially when you're just starting out and money is tight?
The best way is to come up with a plan ahead of time, and provide information in the ways that it will be best received by the different personality types.
Still confused? Here are some things to keep in mind that will help:
Remember your marketing campaign goals. What do you want your visitors, prospects or customers to do? (Give you their contact information? Make a purchase?) Make sure that whatever tactics you're using will help you achieve your goals. And from there, use tactics that will do one of these three things:
Attract visitors to your site. Attraction methods can be anything from articles to videos to blogs to Podcasts. It can be using social media sites to your advantage or creating a following among readers of your Blog.
Convert visitors on your site. This means get your visitors to take whatever action you want them to take. It could mean signing up for your newsletter (giving you their contact information), buying a product or attending a Teleseminar.
Retain their loyalty. Once you've converted them, you want to keep them happy and coming back for more. You retain customers by offering an ongoing newsletter, providing some type of customer loyalty program or even keeping them involved and engaged through social networking sites.
The more you know about who's visiting your site and what they're doing there, the easier this becomes.
There are plenty of ways you can "spy" on your visitors. For example, if you have a Google account (and if you don't you should – they're free and they offer lots of goodies), you can sign up for Google Analytics. It's free, and it will give you lots of very valuable intel about visitors to your Website – such as how people are finding your Website (search engines, direct search and referred from other sites.) It will tell you what keywords visitors used to find you, what pages they visited, how long they stayed – even what page they were on when they left. By knowing this information you can increase your ROI (Return On Investment) for any Internet Marketing Campaign.
